What R5 means on a Kenmore refrigerator
The R5 error code indicates the control board has detected a locked condition on the freezer fan motor (F-FAN). The board monitors motor feedback signals during operation, and when the F-FAN fails to reach or maintain its expected RPM, the board registers a locked rotor condition and throws R5. This can result from a physical obstruction blocking the fan blade, a failed motor winding, or a fault in the wiring between the motor and the control board.
For homeowners, the freezer fan motor is responsible for circulating cold air throughout the freezer compartment and, in most designs, into the fresh food section as well. When this motor locks up or stops spinning, cold air cannot move through the refrigerator properly. You may notice the freezer warming up, ice cream softening, or frost buildup in unusual places. The refrigerator is still trying to run, but without airflow the cooling system becomes much less effective.
The first thing to check is whether something physical is blocking the F-FAN blade. Ice accumulation around the fan, a dislodged item from the freezer, or a piece of packaging material can jam the blade and trigger R5 without any electrical fault present. Clear the area around the fan and reset the unit to see if the code clears before replacing any components.

Common causes of R5
- 01
Ice buildup jamming the fan blade
Wiring / connectionIce can accumulate around the F-FAN blade, physically preventing it from spinning and causing the control board to detect a locked rotor. Defrosting the freezer manually will clear this without any parts replacement.
- 02
Physical obstruction blocking the F-FAN
Wiring / connectionFood items, packaging, or a dislodged freezer bin can contact the fan blade and stop it mid-rotation. Inspecting and clearing the fan area resolves this without replacing any components.
- 03
Failed freezer fan motor
Part replacementThe F-FAN motor windings can burn out or the internal rotor can seize, preventing the blade from spinning regardless of power supply. A failed motor must be replaced to clear R5.
- 04
Faulty wiring harness to the F-FAN motor
Part replacementDamaged, corroded, or disconnected wiring between the freezer fan motor and the control board can cause incorrect feedback signals that register as a locked motor condition. Inspect the harness connector at the motor for corrosion or broken wires and replace the harness if damaged.
