Kenmore Washer Error Code HC

The HC code means the hot and cold inlet hoses are reversed. The washer detected that water temperature on one or both inlets does not match what the control board expected. This is a connection error, not a broken component, and it is resolved by correcting the hose hookup at the back of the machine.

A reset may clear the code temporarily, but if the hoses are still reversed the error will return when the next cycle begins and the control board checks incoming water temperature. The only lasting fix is to physically reconnect the inlet hoses to their correct ports.

In most cases there is no parts cost at all since fixing HC simply requires reconnecting existing hoses. If a hose is damaged or too short to reach the correct port, replacement inlet hoses typically cost between $10 and $30. If a plumber is needed to correct reversed supply valves in the wall, labor costs will vary based on local rates and the complexity of the plumbing.

Turn off both water supply valves behind the washer. Disconnect the two inlet hoses from the back of the machine and reconnect them so the hot supply line goes to the port labeled HOT and the cold supply line goes to the port labeled COLD. Turn the supply valves back on and restart the washer to see if the code clears.

Running cycles with reversed hoses can expose fabrics to incorrect water temperatures, potentially shrinking or damaging clothes intended for cold washing. The washer triggers the HC code to prevent this. It is best to correct the hose connections before running any additional cycles.
