UE stands for Unbalance Error on a Kenmore washer. It means the washer's control system detected that the load inside the drum is not evenly distributed during the spin cycle. The washer stops spinning to protect its internal components from the stress of an off-balance drum. Common causes include clumped laundry, a single heavy item, a very small load, or the machine not being level.

Resetting the washer by unplugging it for about one minute can clear the displayed error code, but it will not fix the underlying cause. If the load is still unbalanced or the machine is still unlevel when power is restored and the cycle restarts, the UE code will return. Address the root cause first, then restart the cycle normally rather than relying on a reset.

In most cases, the UE error costs nothing to resolve since it involves redistributing laundry or adjusting the leveling legs. If the error is caused by worn suspension rods or shock absorbers, parts typically range from $15 to $60 per component, and a service call for a technician to diagnose and replace them could add $100 to $200 or more in labor depending on your area.

Start by opening the door and manually redistributing the laundry so it is spread evenly around the drum. If the load is very small, add a few similar items to give the drum more balanced mass. Also check that all four corners of the washer sit firmly on the floor without rocking, and adjust the leveling legs if needed. After making these adjustments, close the door and restart the spin cycle.

The UE code is a protective feature, so running repeated spin attempts with a severely unbalanced load can put extra stress on the bearings, suspension rods, and motor over time. It is safe to address the error and retry, but you should not force or repeatedly restart the machine while ignoring a persistent imbalance. Resolve the load or leveling issue before continuing normal use.
