KitchenAid Dishwasher Error Code Check Drain

The Check Drain indicator means the dishwasher has detected that the drain stopper at the bottom of the tub is not properly closed or secured. When this condition is sensed, the appliance immediately ends the cycle, pops the lid open, and lights the Check Drain indicator. The machine will not operate until the stopper is correctly installed.

The dishwasher will not allow a cycle to run while the Check Drain condition is active, so there is no immediate safety risk from the error itself. However, you should not attempt to force or bypass the interlock. The drain stopper serves to contain water inside the tub during operation, so running the machine without a properly seated stopper could result in water escaping into the unit or onto the floor.

In most cases there is no repair cost at all, since the error is caused by a misplaced or unsecured drain stopper that simply needs to be reinstalled correctly. If the stopper is cracked or damaged and needs replacement, the part itself is generally inexpensive, typically in the range of a few dollars to around twenty dollars depending on the model. If a technician visit is needed, expect to pay a service call fee in addition to any parts.

Start by opening the dishwasher and locating the drain stopper at the bottom of the tub. Remove it, inspect it for debris or damage, and reinstall it firmly following the instructions in your Use and Care Guide. Once the stopper is seated correctly, close the lid and attempt to start a new cycle. If the error returns after correct installation, the stopper itself may be damaged and need replacement.

Resetting the dishwasher will not resolve the Check Drain error if the underlying condition has not been corrected. The control system checks for drain stopper status each time a cycle is initiated, so the error will reappear if the stopper is still missing or improperly seated. Fix the stopper installation first, then start a new cycle normally.
