Lennox Furnace Error Code E311

E311 means the furnace has detected restricted airflow and has automatically reduced its heat output rate to protect the system. This condition is called blower cutback mode. The furnace is responding to a situation where the blower cannot move the required volume of air, which typically points to a clogged filter or a problem in the duct system.

E311 itself indicates the furnace is operating in a protective mode, not in an immediate failure state. The system is actively reducing heat output to avoid overheating the heat exchanger. However, leaving the underlying airflow restriction unresolved for an extended period can place additional stress on the blower motor and heat exchanger over time, so the issue should be addressed promptly.

If the fix is simply replacing an air filter, the cost is typically in the range of $10 to $30 for the filter itself. If a technician is needed to inspect ductwork and measure static pressure, a service call generally runs $75 to $150 or more depending on your area. Duct repairs or adding return air capacity can range from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000 depending on the extent of the work required.

Start by checking and replacing the air filter, as a dirty filter is the most common cause. Next, make sure all supply and return registers in the home are open and unobstructed. If the code persists after those steps, a technician should inspect the ductwork for collapsed sections, closed dampers, or insufficient return air capacity, and measure system static pressure to identify where the restriction is occurring.

Resetting the furnace may temporarily clear the code, but E311 will return as soon as the control board detects restricted airflow again during normal operation. A reset does not address the root cause. The fault will clear and stay clear only after the airflow restriction, such as a clogged filter or duct obstruction, has been corrected.
