Error code 222 indicates a fault with the sub-cooling inlet pipe temperature sensor on HR unit 6. The system has detected that the sensor circuit is either open (broken) or shorted, meaning it cannot read a valid temperature. The control board flags this error to prevent the system from operating with faulty refrigerant circuit data.

It is not advisable to continue running the system with error 222 active. The control board raises this code because it cannot monitor refrigerant temperature at a critical point in the sub-cooling circuit, which could allow the system to operate outside safe parameters. Continued operation without a valid sensor reading may lead to refrigerant circuit damage or reduced system efficiency.

A reset may temporarily clear error code 222 from the display, but the code will return if the underlying sensor fault is still present. Because the error is caused by a hardware condition such as a broken wire, corroded connector, or failed thermistor, no amount of resetting will resolve the root problem. The sensor circuit must be inspected and repaired before the system will operate reliably without the code returning.

A knowledgeable technician or experienced DIYer can start by inspecting the sensor connector and lead cable for damage, looseness, or corrosion, which sometimes resolves the fault without any parts. However, if the thermistor itself has failed or the wiring is damaged, replacement is required and involves working inside the HR unit. Given that this is a heat recovery system component, professional service is recommended if you are not familiar with multi-zone refrigerant systems.

If only the sensor connector needs cleaning or reseating, the repair cost is primarily the labor charge for a service call, typically in the range of $75 to $150.
