The cause is typically a wiring issue, blown fuse, failed PTC thermistor, or faulty noise filter. The system will not operate normally until communication is restored.

The C5 error itself is a protective shutdown, not an immediate safety hazard. The system stops operating to prevent the indoor and outdoor units from running in an uncoordinated state, which could cause component damage. That said, working on the electrical wiring and components involved in the repair does carry a risk of shock, so power should always be disconnected at the breaker before inspecting any wiring or components.
