Error code 8 on an LG freezer signals a problem with the condenser fan motor, labeled COMP-FAN in the system wiring. The control board has detected either a mechanical restriction preventing the fan from spinning or a loss of the feedback signal from the fan motor. This error can cause the freezer to reduce cooling performance or stop running to protect the compressor.

Continued operation is not recommended when error code 8 is active. The condenser fan removes heat generated by the compressor, and without it functioning correctly the compressor can overheat. Running the freezer in this condition risks permanent compressor damage, which is a significantly more expensive repair than addressing the fan motor fault directly.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code display, but it will return if the underlying fault with the condenser fan motor or its wiring is not resolved. Because this error involves a hardware failure rather than a software glitch, resetting the unit without diagnosing and fixing the cause will not result in a lasting repair.

Some causes of error code 8 are DIY-friendly. Clearing a blocked fan blade or melting ice buildup around the condenser fan requires no special tools. However, testing voltage at PCB connector CN74 pins 3 and 5 with a multimeter and replacing the fan motor or main PCB are tasks better suited to technicians with appliance repair experience and comfort working around electrical components.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. Clearing a physical obstruction may cost nothing if done yourself. Replacing a condenser fan motor typically runs between $80 and $200 including parts and labor. If the main PCB requires replacement, costs can range from $200 to $450 or more depending on parts availability and labor rates in your area.
