What 88/EE means on a LG freezer
The 88/EE error code on an LG freezer indicates a malfunction in the lower compartment temperature sensing system. This code is triggered when the control board detects a fault in either the lower part interior sensor or the lower part cooling sensor. These sensors are thermistors that continuously report compartment and cooling cycle temperatures to the main control board. When sensor readings fall outside expected parameters or the signal is lost entirely, the board flags the 88/EE code and may reduce or halt cooling operations in the lower section of the unit.
The most common hardware cause is a broken or cut sensor line within the wiring harness connected to the Case display assembly. The sensor wiring runs through the unit to relay temperature data, and physical damage, pinched wires, or a failed connector can interrupt this signal entirely. A line cut will produce a complete signal loss, which the board interprets as a critical sensor fault. In contrast, a failing thermistor may produce erratic or out-of-range resistance readings before failing completely.
Diagnosis begins with a physical inspection of the lower interior sensor and the cooling sensor, checking for visible wire damage, corrosion at connectors, or a mechanically failed thermistor. If the sensor line is confirmed to be cut or damaged beyond repair within the Case display harness, the entire Case display assembly requires replacement. If the wiring is intact, the thermistors themselves should be tested for correct resistance values at known temperatures to confirm whether a sensor replacement alone will resolve the fault.

Common causes of 88/EE
- 01
Cut or damaged sensor wiring in the Case display harness
Part replacementPhysical damage to the wiring harness that carries the sensor signal to the control board can sever the connection entirely. Inspect the wiring routed through the Case display assembly for pinched, cut, or frayed sections.
- 02
Failed lower part interior sensor (thermistor)
Part replacementThe thermistor itself can fail due to age, moisture exposure, or thermal stress, producing readings that are out of range or no signal at all. Testing the sensor resistance at a known temperature will confirm whether it has failed.
- 03
Failed lower part cooling sensor (thermistor)
Part replacementThe cooling sensor monitoring the lower section can also malfunction independently of the interior sensor. A failed cooling sensor will trigger the same 88/EE fault and requires replacement if resistance values are outside specification.
- 04
Loose or corroded sensor connector
Wiring / connectionA connector that has worked loose or developed corrosion at the terminal pins can cause an intermittent or complete signal loss without any physical damage to the wire itself. Disconnecting and reseating the connector, and inspecting for corrosion, should be part of the initial inspection.
- 05
Control board not reading sensor signal correctly
Part replacementIf sensors and wiring test within normal parameters, the main control board may be failing to interpret the sensor signal correctly. This is less common but possible if all other components check out during diagnosis.
