LG HVAC Error Code 12

Error code 12 means the indoor unit PCB is detecting the middle pipe thermistor as either open or shorted. The middle pipe thermistor monitors refrigerant temperature at the center of the indoor heat exchanger. When the board cannot read a valid resistance signal from this sensor, it shuts down the system and displays error code 12. The fault can originate from the thermistor itself, the wiring, or the PCB.

The system will typically prevent normal operation while error code 12 is active, which is a protective response. Without accurate middle pipe thermistor data, the unit cannot properly manage refrigerant flow or prevent coil icing, so continued forced operation could cause refrigerant or compressor damage. It is best to leave the unit off until the fault is diagnosed and resolved.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error display, but code 12 will return as soon as the PCB attempts to read the middle pipe thermistor again and finds an invalid signal. Resetting does not address the underlying hardware fault. A lasting repair requires testing and replacing the defective thermistor, correcting any wiring issue, or replacing the PCB if those components check out as good.

A knowledgeable DIYer can inspect and reseat the thermistor connector and check the wiring harness for visible damage without specialized tools. Testing the thermistor resistance requires a multimeter and a water bath at a known temperature, which is also manageable at home. However, if the PCB needs replacement, working on the indoor unit control board requires comfort with disassembly of the air handler and handling of electronic components, so many homeowners prefer to have a technician complete that step.

If only the middle pipe thermistor needs replacement, parts and labor typically range from around $75 to $200 depending on the model and local labor rates. If the indoor unit PCB is the root cause, board replacement can cost between $200 and $600 or more, including parts and labor. Getting a diagnostic visit first is the most cost-effective approach before committing to part replacement.
