LG Refrigerator Error Code 9E
Flex Zone-Damper-Heater Error
Flex Zone-Damper-Heater Error — damper heater open error detected; separation of damper heater housing, contact error, disconnection, or short circuit.
First step from the service manual
Disconnect Main PCB CN77 wire; measure resistance between Black and Brown — should be 135 ohm ±7%. 0 ohm = heater short, infinity = wire/bimetal open.
The complete diagnostic procedure includes additional test steps, resistance specifications, wiring diagram references, and component test points.

What 9E means on a LG refrigerator
The 9E error code on an LG refrigerator indicates a Flex Zone damper heater fault. The damper heater is a small resistance heater integrated into the damper assembly of the Flex Zone compartment. Its purpose is to prevent frost buildup on the damper mechanism, which controls airflow into the Flex Zone. When the refrigerator's main PCB detects an abnormal condition in this heater circuit, it triggers the 9E code and may restrict or disable the Flex Zone's temperature management.
The fault can stem from four distinct conditions: physical separation of the damper heater housing, a poor or corroded contact in the wiring connector, a broken wire or open bimetal thermal limiter, or a short circuit within the heater element itself. The bimetal component acts as a thermal safety device and can open permanently if it has been subjected to excessive heat. Any of these conditions disrupts the expected resistance in the circuit, which the PCB monitors continuously.
The primary diagnostic procedure involves disconnecting the CN77 connector on the main PCB and measuring resistance between the Black and Brown wires. A healthy damper heater reads 135 ohms, plus or minus 7 percent, which puts the acceptable range between approximately 125.5 and 144.5 ohms. A reading of 0 ohms indicates a short circuit within the heater element. An infinite resistance reading points to an open circuit, either in the wiring harness, the bimetal limiter, or the heater element itself.

Common causes of 9E
- 01
Open or failed damper heater element
Part replacementThe heater element itself can burn out or break internally, resulting in infinite resistance across the Black and Brown wires at CN77. This is the most common hardware failure and requires replacing the damper heater assembly.
- 02
Open bimetal thermal limiter
Part replacementThe bimetal thermal safety device in the damper heater circuit can trip permanently if it has been exposed to excessive heat. An open bimetal reads as infinite resistance and cannot be reset; the component must be replaced.
- 03
Disconnected or damaged wiring harness
Wiring / connectionThe wiring between the damper heater and the main PCB CN77 connector can suffer from chafing, pinching, or corrosion at the connector terminals. Inspect the full length of the harness and the connector pins for visible damage or looseness before condemning the heater itself.
- 04
Damper heater housing separation
Wiring / connectionThe heater can physically separate from its housing due to vibration or improper seating, breaking the electrical contact. Visually inspect the damper assembly for the heater being dislodged or improperly seated in its mounting.
- 05
Short circuit in heater element
Part replacementA short circuit within the heater produces a 0-ohm reading across the Black and Brown wires at CN77. This condition requires replacement of the damper heater assembly and may warrant inspecting the wiring harness for signs of melting or heat damage.
