LG Refrigerator Error Code E FS
Freezer sensor error
Freezer sensor error — the freezer temperature sensor has a short, open, or abnormal resistance reading.

What E FS means on a LG refrigerator
The E FS error code on an LG refrigerator indicates a freezer temperature sensor fault. The freezer sensor (also called a thermistor) is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistor that continuously reports freezer compartment temperature to the main PCB. When the control board detects a resistance reading that falls outside the expected range, either due to a short circuit, an open circuit, or an out-of-range resistance value, it triggers the E FS code and may limit or disable compressor and fan operation to protect the system.
The sensor connects to the main PCB at connector CON7, specifically pins 17 and 18. The first diagnostic step is to inspect this connector for looseness, corrosion, or bent pins, as a poor connection can mimic a failed sensor by producing erratic or absent resistance readings. If the connection is secure, the next step is to measure the sensor's resistance directly with a multimeter and compare the reading against the temperature-resistance chart for that sensor. A functioning NTC thermistor will show higher resistance at colder temperatures and lower resistance as temperature rises. A reading of zero ohms indicates a short, while an infinite resistance reading indicates an open circuit.
Common root causes include physical damage to the sensor wire harness from ice buildup or freezer drawer contact, moisture intrusion into the connector causing corrosion, a thermistor that has drifted out of specification due to age, or in less common cases, a faulty main PCB that misreads a correctly functioning sensor. Ruling out wiring and connector issues before replacing the sensor itself is essential, since a new sensor will not resolve the error if the underlying connection or board problem persists.

Common causes of E FS
- 01
Loose or corroded connector at Main PCB
Wiring / connectionThe sensor connects to the main PCB at CON7 pins 17 and 18. A loose, corroded, or improperly seated connector can cause the board to read an incorrect resistance value, triggering the fault without the sensor itself being defective.
- 02
Damaged sensor wiring harness
Part replacementIce accumulation or contact with freezer drawers and shelving can pinch, cut, or abrade the sensor wire, causing an open or short circuit in the harness. Inspect the full wire run from the sensor to the connector for visible damage.
- 03
Failed freezer thermistor
Part replacementThe NTC thermistor itself can fail over time, producing a resistance reading that is shorted, open, or outside the normal temperature-resistance curve. This is confirmed by measuring resistance directly at the sensor terminals with a multimeter.
- 04
Moisture or ice intrusion at the connector
Wiring / connectionWater or frost reaching the CON7 connector can cause corrosion on the pins or temporary short circuits that produce intermittent E FS errors. Drying and cleaning the connector may resolve the fault if no other damage is found.
- 05
Faulty main PCB
Part replacementIf the sensor and wiring both test within specification, the main PCB may be misinterpreting the sensor signal due to a failed input circuit on the board. This is the least common cause and should only be considered after all other components have been ruled out.
