Diagnosis starts with a resistance check of the defrost circuit at the MAIN PCB connectors CN70 and CN71, where the correct reading should be 110 ohms plus or minus 7%.

Continued use with an active defrost error is not recommended for the long term. Without a functioning defrost cycle, frost will accumulate on the evaporator coils, progressively restricting airflow and reducing cooling performance. This can lead to food spoilage and may eventually cause the compressor to overwork. Short-term use while arranging repairs is generally acceptable, but the issue should be addressed promptly.

Repair costs vary depending on which component has failed. Replacement thermal fuses and bimetal thermostats are typically inexpensive parts, often in the range of $10 to $40, though labor charges from a technician will add to that total. A defrost heater assembly generally costs more, often in the $30 to $80 range for the part alone. If the MAIN PCB is at fault, expect part costs in the $100 to $250 range or higher, plus labor.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code from the display, but it will not resolve the underlying component failure. If the defrost heater, thermal fuse, or bimetal thermostat has failed, the error will return as soon as the refrigerator attempts its next defrost cycle. A reset is only useful for ruling out a one-time control board glitch, not as a fix.
