The IU E error code on an LG refrigerator signals an abnormal condition within the freezer compartment icemaker kit. The fault can originate from several components inside the icemaker assembly: the drive motor, the gear mechanism, the Hall effect IC sensor (which monitors motor rotation), or the operation circuit board within the kit itself. The code also triggers when the upper or lower heater inside the icemaker is detected as an open circuit, meaning electrical continuity through the heater element has been lost. Additionally, the error will appear if ice fails to drop from the tray even when the icemaker test switch is manually activated.

The heaters inside the icemaker play a critical role in the ice harvesting cycle. They warm the ice mold slightly so cubes release cleanly from the tray before being swept into the ice bin. If either heater develops an open circuit, the harvesting cycle stalls, triggering the IU E fault. Correct resistance for both the upper and lower heaters falls between 14.1 and 16.3 ohms. Readings significantly outside this range, or an open circuit reading, confirm a failed heater element. Loose wiring connections at the heater terminals or at the icemaker control circuit are another common cause that should be checked before condemning the heater itself.

The Hall IC sensor and the motor/gear assembly are mechanical and electronic components that work together to drive the ice ejector arms through their rotation cycle. A failed Hall IC provides no feedback to the control circuit about arm position, which the system interprets as a stuck or non-functional motor. A worn gear or seized motor will similarly prevent ice from dropping during the test cycle. Diagnosing this code requires systematic inspection of wiring harness connections, heater resistance measurements, and functional testing of the motor and sensor components.
