When the sensor fails, the refrigerator's control system cannot regulate that zone's temperature accurately, triggering the fault code. The failure is identified visually on the display: all LEDs will illuminate simultaneously, but the MEAT OPTI LED will remain off, distinguishing this fault from other sensor or display errors.

The two primary causes of this fault are a cut wire and a short circuit in the sensor wiring harness. A cut wire breaks the circuit entirely, sending no signal to the control board. A short circuit, on the other hand, causes the sensor to read incorrect values or creates a direct path between conductors, both of which the control board interprets as a sensor failure. The wiring connecting the Opti zone evaporator sensor runs through areas of the refrigerator that are subject to repeated opening and closing of compartment doors, temperature cycling, and ice formation, all of which can stress and damage wire insulation and connectors over time.

To confirm the error is active, press and hold the Freeze temp control button and the Super freezing button simultaneously for one second or longer. This forces the display into diagnostic mode and surfaces any stored fault codes, including this sensor failure.
