What R0 means on a LG refrigerator
The R0 error code on an LG refrigerator indicates a failure in the refrigerator compartment temperature sensor, specifically caused by either a short circuit or an open circuit in the sensor wiring or the sensor element itself. This sensor, also called the fridge thermistor, continuously monitors the temperature inside the fresh food compartment and sends resistance-based signals to the main control board. When the board detects a signal that falls outside the expected resistance range, it registers the R0 fault and can no longer trust the temperature data to regulate cooling normally.
As a failsafe response to the R0 condition, the control board forces the compressor and evaporator fan motor into a fixed duty cycle of 15 minutes ON followed by 15 minutes OFF, regardless of actual compartment temperature. This prevents the refrigerator from running continuously without accurate feedback, which could otherwise cause over-cooling or component damage. Notably, the defrost heater circuit continues to operate normally during an R0 fault, which helps isolate the issue to the sensor circuit rather than the defrost system.
The most common causes include a failed thermistor with resistance values that have drifted out of specification, a damaged wire harness with a break or short between the sensor and the control board connector, or corrosion at the connector pins that disrupts the signal. Diagnosing R0 starts with measuring the sensor resistance at the connector and comparing it to the expected value for the current compartment temperature. A properly functioning NTC thermistor should show decreasing resistance as temperature rises.

Common causes of R0
- 01
Failed refrigerator thermistor
Part replacementThe NTC thermistor itself can fail open or short internally, producing resistance readings outside the acceptable range. Measuring the sensor resistance directly and comparing to the expected value for the ambient temperature will confirm this fault.
- 02
Damaged or broken wire harness
Part replacementPhysical damage to the wiring between the sensor and the main control board connector can create an open circuit. Inspect the harness routing for pinched, frayed, or broken wires, particularly near cabinet hinges or sharp edges.
- 03
Corroded or loose connector pins
Wiring / connectionMoisture inside the refrigerator compartment can cause corrosion at the sensor connector, increasing resistance or breaking continuity. Carefully inspect and clean the connector pins, then reseat the connection firmly.
- 04
Short circuit in the sensor wiring
Part replacementIf two wires in the sensor circuit contact each other, the control board reads an abnormally low resistance, triggering the R0 code. A wiring short can be identified by performing a continuity test between the sensor wires with the connector disconnected.
- 05
Faulty main control board
Part replacementIf the thermistor and all wiring test within specification, the control board input circuit may have failed and is misreading the sensor signal. This is the least common cause and should only be considered after the sensor and harness are ruled out.
