The 8E error code means the washer detected a clutch motor fault because the clutch position signal was not received within 5 seconds of the motor starting. The washer attempts an automatic recovery sequence up to 3 times, shaking the drum and restarting the motor each time. If all three attempts fail, the error is locked in and the cycle stops. The issue is in the clutch motor, its wiring, or the physical assembly.

A power reset by unplugging the washer for a few minutes may temporarily clear the 8E code, but it will return if the underlying problem is not fixed. The washer already performs an automatic retry sequence before displaying 8E, so the fault persisted through multiple recovery attempts. A reset alone is not a repair.

Repair costs depend on what has failed. If only a connector or wiring issue is involved, the repair may cost little to nothing beyond labor time. A clutch motor replacement typically runs in the range of $80 to $200 for the part alone, with professional labor adding $100 to $200 or more depending on your area. Control board replacement, if required, is generally the most expensive outcome.

Some causes of the 8E error are DIY-friendly. Start by unplugging the washer, then inspect the clutch motor assembly to confirm it is properly seated and secured. Check the wire connectors at the motor for loose or corroded terminals and reseat them firmly. If the motor itself has failed, replacing it requires moderate mechanical skill and access to the washer's internal components.

You should not continue running the washer while the 8E error is active. The clutch motor is responsible for transitioning the machine between wash and spin modes, and operating the washer without a functioning clutch can place strain on other mechanical components. Stop use until the fault is diagnosed and resolved.
