E5 on an LG washer indicates a water heater error related to abnormal temperature rise rates. The code triggers when water temperature increases 7 degrees Celsius or more in one minute, or rises 2 degrees Celsius or less over a 10-minute heating period. It is displayed through all six course LEDs lighting up along with the 40°C or 60°C temperature LED. The error points to a problem in the heating system, including the heater element, thermistor, wiring, or control board.

Running the washer while an active E5 error is present is not recommended. The fault indicates the heating system is not operating within safe temperature parameters, and one of the trigger conditions involves water heating too rapidly, which represents a potential overheating risk. It is best to power off the machine and diagnose the issue before running another cycle.

The thermistor and wash heater element are the most frequently replaced components when diagnosing an E5 error. The thermistor is typically checked first because it directly governs the temperature data the control board uses to calculate the rate of change.
