LG Washer Error Code PFE

PFE stands for pump filter error on an LG washer. It means the machine detected a problem draining water during the spin cycle. The most common causes are a clogged drain pump filter, a drain hose routed higher than 1 meter above the floor, excessive detergent use, or a malfunctioning drain pump. Cleaning the filter at the lower front of the machine is the recommended first step.

It is not recommended to continue running laundry cycles while PFE is active. The error indicates the machine cannot drain properly, which means water may remain in the drum and could overflow or cause additional strain on the pump motor. Resolve the underlying cause before resuming normal use to avoid potential water damage or component failure.

If the fix is simply cleaning the drain pump filter, there is no parts cost and you can do it yourself in about 10 to 15 minutes. If the drain hose needs repositioning or replacing, hose replacements typically run in the range of $10 to $30 in parts. A failed drain pump is the most expensive repair, with pump parts generally ranging from $30 to $80, plus labor costs of $75 to $150 or more if a technician is needed.

Start by unplugging the washer and locating the small access panel at the lower front of the machine. Place a shallow pan underneath, then unscrew the filter cap to drain residual water and remove any debris from the filter. Reinstall the filter, plug the washer back in, and run a spin or drain cycle to see if the error clears. If it returns, check that the drain hose exit point is no more than 1 meter above the floor, inspect the hose for kinks, and reduce detergent to the recommended amount.

A reset may temporarily clear the PFE code from the display, but the error will return on the next cycle if the underlying problem has not been addressed. To reset, unplug the washer for about 5 minutes and then restore power. This is only useful as a step after you have already cleaned the filter, corrected the hose height, or resolved another confirmed cause.
