PE stands for Programming mode Entry confirmation. It appears on the control board display to indicate the refrigerator has entered programming mode. This is not a malfunction code. It means the control board is ready to receive or confirm its program configuration, which should match the Program Code listed on the unit's serial plate.

First, locate the serial plate inside the refrigerator compartment and find the Program Code printed on it. Compare that code to the code displayed on the control board during PE mode. If they match, exit programming mode using the appropriate button sequence for your model. If they do not match, the control board needs to be reprogrammed or replaced with the correct unit for your model.

If PE returns repeatedly after being cleared, the control board is likely failing to retain its program data, which points to a faulty control board that cannot hold its configuration in memory. This typically requires replacing the control board and ensuring the replacement is programmed with the correct Program Code from the unit's serial plate before installation.

The refrigerator may not operate normally while PE is active because the control board is in programming mode rather than running mode. Food safety can be a concern if the compressor and cooling system are not running. You should exit programming mode or have the board correctly programmed as soon as possible to restore normal operation.

If PE was triggered accidentally through the control panel, clearing it costs nothing. If the control board requires reprogramming during a service call, expect to pay a diagnostic and labor fee, typically between $75 and $150 depending on your area.
