What 3-1-2 means on a Miele freezer
Error code 3-1-2 on a Miele freezer indicates a fault within the icemaker motor circuit. The control board monitors the icemaker motor during its cycle, which includes rotating the ice tray or harvest mechanism to release formed ice cubes. When the motor fails to respond correctly, draws abnormal current, or does not complete its rotation within the expected timeframe, the board registers this fault and displays code 3-1-2. The icemaker assembly is a self-contained unit that integrates the motor, drive gears, and harvest components together.
The motor inside the icemaker is responsible for turning the ejector mechanism that pushes ice cubes out of the mold and into the storage bin. If the motor windings fail, the gear train seizes, or an internal electrical connection breaks down, the motor will not complete its cycle and the fault code is triggered. Because the motor is not a separately serviceable component, it cannot be repaired or replaced on its own. The entire icemaker assembly must be replaced when this fault is confirmed.
The recommended first diagnostic step is to power cycle the appliance by switching it off and then back on. This clears any temporary control board state that may have caused a false trigger. If code 3-1-2 returns after the power cycle, the motor fault is confirmed and icemaker replacement is required. Continuing to operate the freezer with a failed icemaker motor will not damage the refrigeration system itself, but the icemaker will not produce ice until the assembly is replaced.

Common causes of 3-1-2
- 01
Failed icemaker motor windings
Part replacementThe motor windings inside the icemaker assembly can burn out or open over time due to heat cycling and normal wear. This is the most direct cause of code 3-1-2 and results in the motor being completely unresponsive.
- 02
Seized icemaker gear train
Part replacementIce buildup or mechanical wear can cause the internal gears connected to the motor to seize, placing excessive load on the motor and triggering the fault. This is internal to the assembly and cannot be serviced separately.
- 03
Broken internal electrical connection
Part replacementA broken solder joint or internal wiring failure within the icemaker unit can interrupt power to the motor even if the motor itself is intact. Because this is inside the sealed assembly, the entire icemaker must be replaced.
- 04
Temporary control board communication error
Wiring / connectionOn rare occasions, a momentary signal error between the control board and the icemaker can trigger a false fault code. Performing a power cycle by switching the appliance off and back on will determine if the fault is persistent or transient.
