What 4-2-1 means on a Miele freezer
Error code 4-2-1 on a Miele freezer indicates an internal icemaker fault. This code is generated when the icemaker's onboard control circuitry detects an anomaly it cannot attribute to a specific external sensor or component. Rather than pointing to a single failed part like a temperature sensor or water valve, this fault originates within the icemaker module itself, meaning the electronics or mechanical assembly inside the unit have encountered a condition outside acceptable operating parameters.
Internal icemaker faults can result from a corrupted control cycle, a failure in the icemaker's internal motor or drive mechanism, or a fault in the module's logic board. Because the icemaker operates as a largely self-contained assembly, diagnosing individual sub-components within it is generally not practical at the field level. The fault may be intermittent, triggered by a power anomaly or a momentary electrical glitch, which is why the first diagnostic step is a full power cycle of the appliance.
If the fault code clears after switching the appliance off and back on, the icemaker can continue to be monitored for recurrence. If the code returns after the power cycle, the icemaker module requires replacement. The module is treated as a single serviceable assembly, and Miele's diagnostic guidance does not recommend attempting repairs to the internal components of the icemaker unit itself.

Common causes of 4-2-1
- 01
Intermittent electrical or power glitch
Wiring / connectionA brief power fluctuation or voltage irregularity can cause the icemaker's internal control circuit to register a fault. A full power cycle of the appliance is the first step to determine if the fault is transient.
- 02
Failed icemaker internal control board
Part replacementThe logic board inside the icemaker module may have failed, preventing the unit from completing its operational cycle. This type of failure will cause the 4-2-1 code to reappear consistently after each power cycle.
- 03
Internal icemaker motor or drive mechanism failure
Part replacementThe motor or mechanical drive assembly within the icemaker module can seize or fail, causing the unit to detect an internal fault. This typically results in no ice production along with the persistent error code.
- 04
Corrupted icemaker control cycle
Wiring / connectionThe icemaker's internal programming may have encountered a corrupted state, causing it to report an unrecoverable internal fault. A power cycle resets the cycle state and may resolve the issue without part replacement.
