E-31 indicates a weight sensor open circuit error. The microwave's control board detected that the signal from the weight sensor exceeded the valid hexadecimal range (above FF) for more than five seconds, indicating the sensor circuit is open. This affects automatic cooking functions that rely on food weight detection.

Unplugging the microwave and restoring power may temporarily clear the error display, but the E-31 fault will return if the underlying open circuit in the weight sensor system is not repaired. Because the error requires the out-of-range condition to persist for five seconds before triggering, a reset alone does not address the root cause.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. Replacing a weight sensor or wiring harness typically ranges from roughly 50 to 150 dollars in parts, plus labor if a technician is involved. A control board replacement is the most expensive scenario and can range from 100 to 250 dollars or more for parts alone. Getting a diagnostic estimate before committing to repairs is advisable, especially on older units.

Some causes of E-31 are DIY-friendly, such as reseating a loose wiring connector or cleaning corroded contacts. However, working inside a microwave involves high-voltage components, including a capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge even when unplugged. Basic microwave heating functions may still operate while E-31 is displayed, but any automatic cooking modes that depend on the weight sensor will not function correctly.
