The C-72 code means the oven's steam system detected water still remaining in the drain path after the maximum draining time was reached. The water level sensor triggered the fault because it could not confirm a successful drain cycle. This is a safety stop to prevent water overflow or component damage. The steam generator's ground wire, drain path, and drain pump are the primary areas to investigate.

It is not recommended to continue using the steam functions of the oven while C-72 is active. The error indicates the drain system did not complete its cycle, which means water may still be present in the steam generator. Using the oven in this state could lead to overflow or damage to internal components. Basic bake or broil functions may still work, but steam cooking should be avoided until the fault is resolved.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. If the issue is simply a loose ground wire or a clogged drain line, the cost may only be a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. Replacing a drain pump or water level sensor adds parts costs, generally bringing the total to somewhere between $150 and $350. A control board replacement is the most expensive scenario, potentially ranging from $250 to $500 or more depending on the model and labor rates in your area.

Some causes of C-72 are DIY-friendly, such as inspecting and reseating the ground wire on the steam generator or checking for a kinked or clogged drain hose. However, testing and replacing the drain pump, water level sensor, or control board requires electrical knowledge and comfort working inside the appliance. If you are unsure, a qualified appliance technician is the safer choice.

Performing a power reset by unplugging the oven or tripping the circuit breaker for a few minutes may temporarily clear the C-72 code. However, if the underlying cause such as a blocked drain, faulty pump, or bad ground wire is not addressed, the code will return the next time the steam system attempts to drain. A reset is useful for confirming whether the fault is intermittent, but it is not a repair.
