Error code 87 on a Sub-Zero freezer indicates that the speed information being transmitted from the electronic control board is outside of acceptable parameters. This code is specific to the 700TF/I-2V model configuration, which uses a variable-speed (VS) compressor system. In this setup, the main control board communicates compressor speed commands to a dedicated VS compressor controller via a serial communication circuit. When the controller detects that the speed signal it is receiving falls outside the expected specification range, it registers error code 87.

The serial communication link between the control board and the VS compressor controller is the primary area of concern when this error appears. Wiring faults such as loose connections, damaged insulation, broken leads, or corrosion at connector terminals can disrupt the signal integrity enough to push the reported speed data out of specification. In some cases, the error may be a transient anomaly rather than a persistent hardware failure, particularly if the unit is cooling normally with no temperature complaints.

Because this error can appear without any actual cooling performance degradation, the first step is always to confirm whether a real cooling problem exists.
