The Fr error code on a Thermador oven signals a fault condition in the lower oven that can stem from three distinct failure points. The first involves the door lock switch system: if the lower oven latch switches report an invalid or inconsistent status, the control interprets this as an illegal door lock state and triggers the Fr code. This typically occurs when the physical latch mechanism is jammed, the switches are misaligned, or one or more of the switches has failed electrically. The control relies on these switches to confirm door position before allowing certain operations, particularly self-clean cycles.

The second possible cause is a communication fault between the main relay board and the display head. If the display head is defective, the relay board may detect a break in communication and log Fr as a communication error. The third and often most technically significant cause involves the element supervisor circuit for the lower oven. When this supervisor is disabled, the oven's thermal management for the lower cavity is compromised. This condition is most commonly triggered by an intermittent signal from the lower oven temperature sensor, which causes the relay board to lose confidence in thermal readings and shut down the heating element control loop.

Diagnosing Fr requires systematic elimination of each potential failure point. Because the temperature sensor is a relatively accessible and affordable component, it is typically addressed first before condemning the lower oven relay board.
