Error code 05 on the Thermador WFK 2401 indicates that the drum motor is operating erratically. This means the control board is detecting irregular or inconsistent motor behavior, such as unexpected speed fluctuations, loss of rotation signal, or current draw that falls outside the expected operating parameters. The drum motor is responsible for rotating the drum through its various wash and spin cycles, and any instability in its operation will trigger this fault to prevent mechanical damage or incomplete cycle execution.

The most direct diagnostic approach is to measure the voltage present at the motor connectors while the motor is energized. If voltage is absent or unstable at the connectors, the fault likely originates upstream in the wiring harness, motor control board, or relay circuit rather than in the motor itself. If voltage is present and stable but the motor still behaves erratically, the motor windings, capacitor, or brushes (if applicable) should be inspected for degradation or failure.

Common contributors to this fault include damaged wiring between the control board and motor, a failing motor capacitor causing inconsistent torque, worn motor brushes creating intermittent contact, or a defective motor control module that cannot maintain a consistent drive signal. Loose or corroded connector terminals at the motor harness are also a frequent culprit and should be inspected and cleaned as part of the initial diagnosis before replacing any components.
