Code 11 means the primary limit switch has been open continuously for more than 5 minutes. The primary limit is a safety device that shuts off the burners when the furnace gets too hot. When it stays tripped this long, it signals a persistent airflow problem rather than a brief temperature spike. The most common causes are a clogged air filter or a dirty blower wheel that is preventing adequate airflow through the system.

The error itself indicates that the safety system is working correctly by shutting down the burners before damage occurs. However, leaving the underlying airflow problem unresolved can eventually cause heat exchanger damage, which is both costly to repair and a potential carbon monoxide risk. Address the cause promptly rather than simply resetting the unit and continuing to run it.

If a dirty air filter is the cause, the fix costs only the price of a replacement filter, typically in the range of $5 to $30.
