ERR 101 indicates a Y1 relay failure on the furnace control board. The board detected that the Y1 output, which controls first-stage cooling, was in the wrong state: either ON when it should be OFF, or OFF when it should be ON. This fault directly impacts air conditioning operation and requires diagnosis of the control board and Y1 wiring circuit.

ERR 101 is primarily a functional fault affecting cooling operation rather than a direct safety hazard. The furnace heating function is typically unaffected. However, if the Y1 relay is stuck ON, the compressor could run outside of intended conditions, potentially shortening its service life. Addressing the fault promptly is recommended to protect connected components.

A knowledgeable DIYer can inspect and reseat low-voltage wiring connections at the thermostat and furnace control board, which may resolve the fault if a loose connection is the cause.
