The error is typically caused by a mode mismatch between the control board setting and the type of thermostat connected to the system.

ERR 139 is a communication configuration fault, not a safety-critical failure such as a gas leak or heat exchanger problem. However, it can prevent the furnace from operating normally, leaving the home without heat. The issue should be addressed promptly, especially during cold weather, but it does not present an immediate safety hazard.

If the fix only requires changing the operating mode setting on the control board, the cost is limited to a service call fee, which typically ranges from $75 to $150 depending on your area.
