Trane Furnace Error Code ERR 91

ERR 91 is a communication fault code indicating the furnace control board has lost contact with the blower motor, the inducer motor, the thermostat demand signal, or the internal clock signal. The furnace shuts down when this loss of communication is detected to prevent improper or unsafe operation. Resolving the error requires identifying which specific communication path has failed.

When ERR 91 is active, the furnace will generally not operate because it has detected a communication failure and locked out as a safety precaution. Attempting to repeatedly reset and restart the furnace without resolving the underlying fault is not recommended. Leave the unit off until the specific cause has been diagnosed and corrected.

Repair costs vary widely depending on the root cause. A simple wiring harness repair or connector fix may cost between $75 and $200 in labor. Replacing an ECM blower or inducer motor typically runs between $400 and $900 including parts and labor. A full control board replacement can range from $300 to $700 or more. A diagnostic service call to identify the specific fault is usually the first cost, running between $75 and $150.

Some causes of ERR 91, such as a loose wiring connector or a thermostat issue, can be addressed by a knowledgeable DIYer. Inspecting and reseating harness connectors and checking thermostat wiring are reasonable starting points. However, diagnosing a failed ECM motor or a faulty control board typically requires specialized tools and electrical knowledge, so a licensed HVAC technician is recommended for those repairs.

A power reset may temporarily clear the fault code, but if the underlying communication problem persists, ERR 91 will return after the furnace attempts to restart and again fails to establish communication. Resetting without diagnosing the root cause does not fix the issue and can delay proper repair. The code should be treated as a symptom requiring investigation, not just a code to be cleared.
