What F3-E1 means on a Whirlpool cooktop
The F3-E1 error code on a Whirlpool cooktop indicates that the main oven temperature sensor for the lower oven has been detected as either open (broken circuit) or shorted (circuit collapsed to near-zero resistance). The temperature sensor, typically a resistance temperature detector (RTD), works by changing its electrical resistance in proportion to heat. At room temperature, the sensor should read within a specific resistance range corresponding to 50-90°F. When the control board reads a value outside the expected range, either because the circuit is broken entirely or because resistance has dropped to near zero, it flags F3-E1 and disables the oven to prevent unsafe operation.
The sensor connects to the control board through connector P10. Diagnostics begin by pressing CANCEL, CANCEL, then START to enter the built-in diagnostic mode, which allows the technician to read live sensor temperature data. If the displayed value is wildly out of range, not present, or fixed at an extreme value while the oven is at room temperature, the sensor or its wiring circuit is the likely culprit. An open circuit will often display an extremely high or maximum temperature reading, while a short will typically show an extremely low or minimum reading.
Common causes include a failed sensor element, damaged wiring harness between the sensor and connector P10, corroded or loose connector pins at P10, or in some cases a failed control board that is misreading an otherwise functional sensor. Physical inspection of the sensor probe, the wiring run, and the connector pins at P10 is essential before replacing any parts.

Common causes of F3-E1
- 01
Failed oven temperature sensor
Part replacementThe RTD sensor probe itself has burned out or broken internally, causing an open or shorted circuit. This is the most frequent cause and can be confirmed by measuring the sensor's resistance with a multimeter when the oven is at room temperature.
- 02
Loose or corroded connector at P10
Wiring / connectionThe sensor wiring harness connects to the control board at connector P10, and corrosion, heat damage, or a loose fit at this connector can interrupt or short the signal. Inspect P10 visually for burnt pins, oxidation, or a connector that is not fully seated.
- 03
Damaged wiring harness
Part replacementThe wiring between the sensor and connector P10 can be pinched, chafed, or heat-damaged over time, creating an open or short in the circuit. A visual inspection of the full wire run and continuity testing with a multimeter will identify this issue.
- 04
Sensor probe dislodged from mounting position
Wiring / connectionIf the sensor probe has shifted out of its bracket inside the oven cavity, it may read inaccurate temperatures or lose connection at the harness junction. Check that the probe is seated correctly in its mount at the back wall of the lower oven.
- 05
Faulty control board
Part replacementIn cases where the sensor and all wiring test within normal specifications, the control board itself may be misreading the sensor signal due to a failed input circuit. This is the least common cause and should only be considered after the sensor and wiring have been ruled out.
