General microwave and hood functions such as manual cook modes, fan, and lighting typically remain usable when F4E9 is active since the fault is isolated to the SmartPop sound-detection system. However, the automatic Popcorn function should not be used until the error is resolved, as the sensor that stops cooking at the right time is not functioning reliably. Continuing to use the Popcorn feature without a working sound sensor risks overcooking or burning food.

The knock test is a built-in diagnostic that checks whether the sound sensor can detect and count acoustic input from the microwave door. To perform it, press CANCEL-CANCEL-START to enter Diagnostics mode, then press the POPCORN button. Immediately knock firmly on the microwave oven door at least 12 times within a 5-second window and watch the counter on the display. Each knock should increment the counter. If the counter does not change or stops short of your knock count, the sound sensor or its wiring connection is the likely failure point.

Start by entering Diagnostics mode using the CANCEL-CANCEL-START sequence, then press POPCORN and knock on the microwave oven door at least 12 times within 5 seconds. Watch the counter display to see if it registers the knocks. If it does not respond at all, inspect the wiring harness connected to the sound sensor for loose or damaged connectors.
