Error code 17 on a Whirlpool washer means the Dry Load Sense Timeout has been triggered. This happens when the washer cannot reach its target drum speed within the required time during the load sensing phase at the start of a cycle. The most common cause is standing water in the tub from a previous incomplete cycle. Drain any water present and restart the cycle to see if the error clears.

The washer will not complete the cycle when error code 17 is active, so normal use is already interrupted. It is safe to open the door and inspect the tub for water or an overloaded condition. Avoid forcing repeated cycle attempts without addressing the root cause, as this can place additional stress on the motor and drive components.

If the issue is simply standing water or an overloaded drum, there is no parts cost involved. A drive belt replacement typically runs between $10 and $40 for the part, plus labor if a technician is hired.
