Whirlpool Washer Error Code 8E

The 8E code on a Whirlpool washer indicates a MEMS sensor or harness failure. The MEMS sensor monitors drum motion and balance, and when the control system cannot receive a valid signal from it, the washer shuts down and displays this fault. The problem can be in the MEMS sensor board itself, the wire harness, or the main PCB.

A reset may temporarily clear the fault display, but if the underlying hardware problem with the MEMS sensor, harness, or PCB is not corrected, the 8E code will return when the washer attempts to run a cycle. Resetting is useful for confirming whether the fault is intermittent, but it does not substitute for diagnosing and repairing the root cause.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. If only the wire harness or a connector needs attention, costs may be minimal, covering only labor time. Replacing the MEMS sensor kit typically falls in the range of $50 to $150 for the part, plus labor. The washer is designed to stop operation when the 8E fault is active, because the MEMS sensor is involved in detecting drum imbalance during spin. Running the machine without a functioning sensor could allow severe vibration or mechanical damage to go undetected.
