E2 on a Whirlpool washer indicates a Switch Error or Main Relay Error. The control board has detected that the power switch or a tact switch (a panel button) appears to be stuck in the pressed position, or there is a fault in the main relay circuit. The washer stops operating until the underlying cause is identified and corrected.

A reset may temporarily clear the E2 code, but the error will return if the underlying cause is not corrected. If a button is stuck, a relay connection is loose, or the PBA screws are too tight, the fault condition will still be present after the reset and the code will reappear during the next cycle.

If the fix is simply loosening overtightened PBA screws or reseating a relay connector, there may be no parts cost at all, with any expense limited to a service call fee if a technician is involved. If a tact switch, main relay, or the full control board needs replacement, parts and labor costs typically range from around $100 to $350 or more depending on the specific component and local labor rates.

Start by pressing each button on the control panel individually to confirm that none are stuck or jammed. If all buttons move freely, check whether any recent service work involved reinstalling the control board, as overtightened mounting screws on the PBA are a known cause of this error. If those checks do not resolve the issue, inspect the main relay wiring connections for proper seating before considering component replacement.

It is not recommended to continue using the washer while E2 is active. The error indicates a potential problem with switch inputs or the main relay, and the machine has halted operation for this reason. Running the washer without diagnosing the fault could risk improper operation or additional damage to the control board or relay circuit.
