E4 on a Whirlpool washer means the control board detected an open lid condition at the start of the spin phase during a rinse and spin cycle. The washer requires a confirmed closed lid before allowing the drum to spin, as a safety precaution. This can be triggered by a physically open lid, a failed lid switch, or a problem with the lid strike or wiring.

Resetting the washer may temporarily clear the E4 code, but the error will return at the next spin attempt if the underlying cause is not addressed. If the lid switch is faulty or the lid strike is damaged, the control board will detect the open circuit again and halt the cycle. A reset is only a lasting fix if the original trigger was simply an open lid.

If the fix is simply closing the lid or reseating a loose wiring connector, there is no parts cost. A replacement lid strike is generally an inexpensive part, typically in the range of $5 to $20. A replacement lid switch part usually costs between $15 and $50 depending on the model. If professional repair service is needed, labor charges will add to those part costs.

Start by making sure the lid is fully and firmly closed, then restart the cycle. If E4 returns with the lid closed, inspect the lid strike for damage and check the wiring connector at the lid switch for looseness or corrosion. If those check out, perform a continuity test on the lid switch itself. A switch that shows no continuity when actuated needs to be replaced.

The washer will not allow the drum to spin while E4 is active, which is intentional. Running any cycle that requires spinning will be blocked until the lid switch circuit reads as closed. You should not attempt to bypass or override the lid switch, as it is a safety component designed to prevent access to a spinning drum.
