LO stands for Door Unlock Fail on a Whirlpool washer. It means the control board attempted to unlock the door at the end of a cycle but could not confirm the door released successfully. The fault involves the door switch, the door latch actuator, or the PBA door sensing circuit. Until the underlying issue is resolved, the door may remain locked and the washer will not operate normally.

You should not attempt to run wash cycles while the LO code is active. The washer's control system detected a fault in the door lock circuit, and continuing to operate the machine could worsen the underlying problem. Additionally, the door may be physically locked and forcing it open risks damaging the latch assembly or door itself.

A power reset, such as unplugging the washer for a minute and restarting, may temporarily clear the code if the fault was caused by a transient signal issue. However, if the door switch, latch actuator, wiring, or PBA circuit has an actual hardware fault, the LO code will return as soon as the machine attempts to unlock the door again. A reset is a reasonable first step but is not a substitute for diagnosing and repairing the root cause.

Checking wiring harness connectors for looseness or corrosion and inspecting the door latch for physical obstructions require no specialized tools. Testing the door switch with a multimeter is also a straightforward step. Replacing the door latch assembly or door switch requires basic disassembly skills, but PBA replacement is generally best left to a technician.
