Error code 4021 on a Wolf oven indicates that the control board has detected a missing or open load on the bake element circuit in the upper or single oven cavity. The control system monitors electrical continuity through the bake element during operation and expects to see a defined load (current draw) when the element is energized. When the board sends voltage to the bake element circuit and detects no return signal or an open circuit condition, it flags code 4021 and disables the bake function to prevent unsafe operation.

The bake element itself is the most common source of this fault. Elements can fail by burning through at a visible point along the element body, or they can develop internal open circuits with no outward physical signs. Either failure removes the load from the circuit entirely. Beyond the element, the wiring harness connecting the element terminals to the control board can develop breaks, corrosion at connectors, or loose terminal connections that interrupt continuity and produce the same open-load condition.

The control board itself can also be a factor if it fails to properly sense the element load even when the circuit is intact, though this is the least common cause. Diagnosis should begin with a visual inspection of the bake element for burn marks, blisters, or holes, followed by a continuity check using a multimeter across the element terminals with power disconnected. Any open reading on the element confirms it needs replacement. If the element checks good, tracing the wiring harness for damage or loose connections at both the element terminal block and the control board connector is the next step.
