LG Dryer Not Heating?

An LG dryer that tumbles but doesn’t heat is one of the most common dryer complaints. The fix is often simpler than you’d expect.

Safety first

Always unplug the dryer (or turn off the gas) before inspecting internal components. Electric dryers operate on 240V, which is dangerous. Never bypass the thermal fuse.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

1
Check the lint filter and exhaust vent

A clogged lint filter or blocked exhaust vent is the most common cause of poor or no heating. Clean the lint screen and then go outside and check the vent hood. If airflow is weak, disconnect the vent from the back of the dryer and run it for a few minutes to confirm the dryer heats without the vent connected.

2
Check the circuit breaker

Electric dryers need two 120V breakers (one 240V circuit). If one breaker trips, the dryer may still tumble but won’t heat. Flip both breakers fully off, then back on. If one keeps tripping, you have an electrical issue.

3
Check the gas supply (gas models)

If you have a gas dryer, make sure the gas supply valve behind the dryer is fully open. It’s a lever that should be parallel to the gas line. If the igniter glows but the gas doesn’t light, the gas valve solenoids may have failed.

4
Run a sensor dry vs. timed dry test

Switch to a Timed Dry cycle for 30 minutes on High Heat. If it heats on Timed Dry but not on Sensor Dry, the moisture sensors (metal strips inside the drum) may be dirty. Clean them with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth.

5
Inspect the thermal fuse

LG dryers have a thermal fuse on the blower housing. If the dryer overheated (usually from a blocked vent), this fuse blows and cuts power to the heating element. You can test it with a multimeter for continuity. It’s a one-time fuse — it must be replaced, not reset.

When to call a professional

If the thermal fuse blew, always find and fix the root cause (usually a blocked vent) before replacing it, or it will blow again. If the heating element has visible breaks or the gas valve solenoids have failed, the parts are inexpensive but the disassembly can be involved.
