Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Cooling?

Whirlpool makes some of the most reliable refrigerators on the market, but cooling issues can still happen. Here’s what to check before calling a repair service.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

1
Check the temperature controls

Whirlpool fridges use different control systems depending on the model. Some have a dial (1–5 or 1–7) while others have a digital display. Set the fridge to 37°F and freezer to 0°F. On dial models, setting 3–4 is typically correct. Make sure the controls weren’t accidentally turned to the lowest setting.

2
Ensure proper airflow around the unit

Whirlpool refrigerators need at least 1 inch of clearance on the sides and 2 inches on top for proper ventilation. If the fridge is in a tight enclosure or pushed too close to the wall, the condenser can’t dissipate heat properly.

3
Clean the condenser coils

On most Whirlpool models, the condenser coils are behind a grille at the bottom front of the refrigerator. Snap off the grille, vacuum the coils with a brush attachment, and replace the grille. This alone fixes many cooling complaints.

4
Test the evaporator fan

Open the freezer door and hold the door switch in. You should hear the evaporator fan running. If you don’t hear it, the fan motor may have failed. Whirlpool evaporator fans are behind the rear panel in the freezer and are a common wear item.

5
Check the start relay on the compressor

The compressor start relay is a small component plugged into the side of the compressor. If it fails, the compressor won’t start and you may hear a clicking sound every few minutes. You can unplug it and shake it — if it rattles, it’s burned out and needs replacement.

When to call a professional

If you smell a chemical or burning odor from the back of the fridge, or if the compressor is extremely hot, there may be a sealed system issue. Refrigerant leaks require EPA-certified equipment to repair and are not DIY-friendly.
