Whirlpool Washer Leaking?
A Whirlpool washer leak can come from many places depending on whether you have a top-loader or front-loader. Here’s how to find the source.
Turn off both water supply valves before inspecting any connections. If water has pooled near electrical outlets, shut off the circuit breaker before mopping up.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
The most common and easiest leak to fix is at the water supply connections. Check both hot and cold hoses where they connect to the washer and to the wall valves. Look for drips, rust, or bulging. Replace any hose that shows wear. Stainless steel braided hoses are recommended and last much longer.
Whirlpool HE washers (both top and front-load) use very little water. Overloading causes water to splash over the tub edge, and too much detergent creates suds that leak through the dispenser or door seal. Use the manufacturer’s recommended load size and detergent amount.
Make sure the drain hose is securely connected and properly inserted into the standpipe. The hose should go 6–8 inches into the standpipe but not be airtight (it needs an air break). If it’s too deep or too loose, water can overflow or pull out during drain cycles.
On Whirlpool top-load washers, the tub seal sits where the transmission shaft enters the outer tub. If this seal fails, water drips from the bottom of the washer, usually during the spin cycle. You may also notice oil spots on your clothes.
On Whirlpool front-load washers (Duet, WFW series), check the rubber door boot for tears, especially at the bottom where small objects and debris collect. Pull back all the folds and look carefully. Even a tiny puncture will cause a leak during fill and wash cycles.

When to call a professional
If the washer leaks from underneath during the spin cycle and you see oil residue, the main tub seal and possibly the bearings have failed. On Whirlpool top-loaders, the tub seal replacement also usually requires replacing the tub bearing. This is a labor-intensive repair.
