Whirlpool Washer Won't Spin?
Whirlpool makes both top-load and front-load washers with different spin mechanisms. Here’s how to troubleshoot a no-spin condition on either type.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
Whirlpool top-load washers have a lid switch that must be engaged for the spin cycle. Close the lid and listen for a click. If you don’t hear it, the lid switch or the lid strike may be broken. You can test the switch with a multimeter for continuity.
On belt-driven Whirlpool models, a worn or broken drive belt will prevent spinning. Tilt the washer back and look underneath — the belt wraps around the motor pulley and the drum. If it’s loose, frayed, or broken, it needs replacement. Belts typically last 3–5 years.
Whirlpool direct-drive washers use a plastic motor coupling between the motor and transmission. If the washer fills and drains but won’t agitate or spin, the coupling has likely broken. This is a very common failure and the part is inexpensive.
Open the washer and redistribute the clothes. On Whirlpool top-loaders with an impeller (no agitator), large items like sheets can wrap around each other and create an unbalanced mass that prevents spinning.
If the washer won’t drain, it won’t spin. Check the drain hose for kinks and make sure the standpipe isn’t clogged. On some Whirlpool models, there’s a coin trap or filter at the drain pump that can catch debris.

When to call a professional
If you hear the motor humming but the drum doesn’t move, and the motor coupling is intact, the transmission or clutch assembly may have failed. On Whirlpool direct-drive washers, the clutch sits between the transmission and the basket and wears out over time. This is a more involved repair.
