What E31 means on a AEG washer

The E31 error code on an AEG washer indicates a pressure sensor calibration failure. During the calibration sequence, the machine performs a controlled water fill and then checks the water level reading from the pressure sensor (also called a pressure switch or level transducer). For calibration to succeed, the detected water level must fall within a specific window of 0 to 60mm. If the sensor reports a level outside this range after the calibration fill, the control board flags the error. The dry run protection condition being off is also required for this check to proceed correctly.

The pressure sensor works by detecting air pressure changes in a sealed chamber connected to the tub via a small hose. As water fills the tub, it compresses air in this tube, and the sensor converts that pressure into a water level reading for the control board. If the water supply is insufficient, the tub may not reach the expected level range. Conversely, a blocked or kinked pressure hose, a faulty sensor, or a stuck water inlet valve can all cause the reported level to fall outside the 0-60mm calibration window.

The first diagnostic step is confirming the water tap supplying the washer is fully open, as restricted or absent water flow is the most common and easily corrected cause of this error. If water supply is confirmed adequate, attention should shift to inspecting the pressure hose for blockages or disconnections, and testing the pressure sensor itself for correct operation.

Common causes of E31

  1. 01

    Water tap closed or restricted

    Wiring / connection

If the water supply tap is partially or fully closed, the washer cannot fill to the required level during calibration. Check that the tap is fully open and that water pressure to the machine is adequate.

  2. 02

    Kinked or blocked inlet hose

    Wiring / connection

A bent, kinked, or clogged water inlet hose will restrict flow and prevent proper filling. Inspect the hose behind the machine for kinks and check the mesh filter at the inlet connection for debris buildup.

  3. 03

Blocked or disconnected pressure sensor hose

    Wiring / connection

The small rubber hose connecting the tub to the pressure sensor can become clogged with detergent residue or slip off its fitting. A blocked or disconnected hose causes the sensor to read an incorrect water level.

  4. 04

    Faulty water inlet valve

    Part replacement

If the inlet valve solenoid is not opening fully or is partially blocked, the tub fill rate will be too slow or too low to satisfy the calibration check. The valve may need to be tested for correct operation and replaced if defective.

  5. 05

    Defective pressure sensor

    Part replacement

A failed or out-of-range pressure sensor will report incorrect water levels to the control board even when the tub fill is correct. If all other causes are ruled out, the sensor should be tested and replaced if it is not responding accurately.

Frequently asked questions about E31

What does E31 mean on a AEG washer?
E31 indicates a pressure sensor calibration error. During a calibration water fill, the washer checks that the water level falls within a 0 to 60mm range as measured by the pressure sensor. If the level is outside that range and dry run protection is off, the machine stores the E31 code and stops. The most common cause is a closed or restricted water supply tap.
How do I fix the E31 error on my AEG washer?
Start by making sure the water supply tap is fully open. Next, inspect the inlet hose for kinks and clean the mesh filter at the hose connection point on the back of the machine. If water supply is fine, check the small pressure hose that runs from the tub to the pressure sensor for blockages or loose connections. If these steps do not resolve the error, the water inlet valve or the pressure sensor itself may need testing and replacement.
Is it safe to use my AEG washer while the E31 error is showing?
You should not continue using the washer until the E31 error is resolved. The machine has halted because it cannot confirm the correct water level, which means a wash cycle may not run properly. Running the machine in this state could result in a poor wash result or potential issues related to incorrect water levels.
Will resetting my AEG washer clear the E31 error?
Resetting the machine may temporarily clear the error display, but the code will return if the underlying problem is not fixed. The calibration check runs automatically, so if the water supply is restricted or the pressure sensor system has a fault, the E31 will reappear at the next cycle. Address the root cause before attempting a reset.
How much does it cost to repair an E31 error on an AEG washer?
If the fix is simply opening the water tap or cleaning a filter, there is no parts cost. Replacing a water inlet valve typically costs between 30 and 80 dollars for the part, plus labor if a technician is involved. A replacement pressure sensor generally ranges from 20 to 60 dollars. Total repair costs including a professional service call can range from 80 to 200 dollars depending on the fault and your location.
