AEG Washer Error Code C3
Aqua Control fault
Aqua Control fault – float switch (f16) has detected water in the base of the machine, triggering the drain pump directly and halting the program.
First step from the service manual
Check for leaks; once the float switch resets, press Start/Pause to resume the program.

What C3 means on a AEG washer
The C3 error code on an AEG washer indicates an Aqua Control fault. This system is a flood protection mechanism built into the base of the machine. When water accumulates in the drip tray at the bottom of the appliance, a float switch designated as F16 rises with the water level and closes an electrical circuit that signals the control board. The control board responds immediately by activating the drain pump to remove water from the drum and suspending the active wash program entirely.
The Aqua Control system is designed to prevent serious water damage by detecting even small amounts of leakage before it can spread across a floor. The float switch F16 sits in the base tray and remains in a low position during normal operation. Any water that escapes internal hoses, pumps, seals, or the drum itself collects in this tray and lifts the float. Until that water evaporates or is removed and the float drops back to its resting position, the machine will not resume normal operation.
Diagnosing this fault requires identifying the source of the water that reached the base tray. Leaks can originate from multiple points including door seals, inlet hose connections, internal hose clamps, the pump housing, or the tub-to-pump drain path. Once the leak source is addressed and the base tray is dry, the float switch resets automatically. At that point, pressing Start/Pause allows the program to continue. If the float switch itself is faulty and triggers C3 without any actual water present, the switch will need testing or replacement.

Common causes of C3
- 01
Leaking door seal or gasket
Part replacementTears, cracks, or debris buildup on the door boot seal can allow water to drip past the door and run down into the base tray during a wash cycle. Inspect the seal visually and feel for damage around its entire circumference.
- 02
Loose or damaged internal hose connection
Part replacementHoses connecting the drum, pump, and dispenser drawer can develop loose clamps or small splits over time, allowing water to drip into the base. Tip the machine carefully and inspect all visible hose joints for moisture or mineral deposits indicating a slow leak.
- 03
Drain pump housing leak
Part replacementThe pump body or its sealing points can crack or develop leaks, particularly if debris has caused an obstruction that built up pressure. Check the pump housing and filter cap area for signs of water seepage.
- 04
Detergent drawer or dispenser housing overflow
Wiring / connectionUsing too much detergent or a clogged dispenser housing can cause water and foam to overflow internally and find its way to the base tray. Check the dispenser compartment for blockages and reduce detergent quantity if foam is excessive.
- 05
Faulty float switch (F16)
Part replacementIf no water is visible in the base tray and no leak source can be found, the F16 float switch itself may be stuck in the triggered position or electrically faulty. The switch would need to be tested for proper operation and replaced if it is signaling incorrectly.
