What E:01 means on a Bosch washer
The E:01 error code on a Bosch washer indicates that the control system has detected an open or unengaged door lock condition. The washer's control board continuously monitors the door lock mechanism through a dedicated circuit. When the board does not receive confirmation that the door latch has properly engaged and the lock has actuated, it triggers E:01 and prevents the cycle from starting. This is a fundamental safety interlock: the machine will not fill with water or begin drum rotation if the door lock signal is absent.
The door lock assembly, also called the door interlock or door latch switch, contains both a mechanical latch and an electrical switch or set of contacts. When the door closes properly, the latch catches the striker on the door, and the lock's internal switch closes to send a confirmation signal back to the control board. If any part of this sequence fails, whether because the door is physically ajar, the latch mechanism is worn, or the switch contacts are faulty, the board reads the door as open and displays E:01.
Wiring between the door lock assembly and the control board is another potential failure point. A loose connector at the lock assembly or a broken wire in the harness can interrupt the signal even when the lock itself is mechanically sound. In some cases, the control board itself may have a fault in the input circuit that monitors the door, though this is a less common cause compared to physical lock and wiring issues.

Common causes of E:01
- 01
Door not fully closed
Wiring / connectionThe most frequent cause is simply a door that has not been pushed firmly enough to engage the latch. Clothing or debris caught in the door seal can also prevent a complete close.
- 02
Worn or broken door latch
Part replacementThe plastic latch hook on the door or the striker plate on the cabinet can wear down or break over time, preventing the latch from catching securely. Visually inspect both components for cracks, deformation, or missing pieces.
- 03
Faulty door lock assembly
Part replacementThe internal switch contacts inside the door lock interlock can fail even when the latch mechanism appears intact. If the latch catches but the error persists, the lock assembly is likely not sending the confirmation signal to the control board.
- 04
Loose or damaged wiring connector
Wiring / connectionThe connector at the door lock assembly can work loose due to vibration over time, or individual wires in the harness can break. Unplug the washer and check that the connector at the lock is fully seated.
- 05
Control board input fault
Part replacementIn rare cases, the control board's door lock monitoring circuit fails, causing it to misread the lock status even when the lock is functioning correctly. This is typically diagnosed only after all other components have been confirmed good.
