Error code 3 on a Carrier air conditioner indicates short cycling, which means the compressor has completed four consecutive run cycles of less than three minutes each. The CADM module detects and logs this condition because repeated short starts stress the compressor motor and can cause premature failure. Diagnosis focuses on the thermostat wiring connection to the CADM, the thermostat itself, and the control board.

Continuing to operate the unit with an active short cycling fault is not recommended. Each short compressor start draws a high in-rush current through the motor windings, and repeated starts without adequate run time will heat and degrade the winding insulation. Prolonged short cycling is one of the most common causes of compressor burnout, which is the most expensive repair on any air conditioning system.

Repair costs vary widely depending on the root cause. A loose wire connection or thermostat replacement is generally in the range of $75 to $300 including labor. A control board replacement typically runs $200 to $600 depending on the model. If the compressor has been damaged by repeated short cycling and requires replacement, costs can range from $1,200 to $2,500 or more, making early diagnosis especially important.

Start by inspecting the wiring connection between the thermostat Y1 terminal and the CADM Y terminal for any looseness or corrosion, and reseat the connection firmly. If the wiring is sound, test the thermostat to confirm it is sending a stable cooling call signal throughout the cycle. If both check out, evaluate the control board for defects and check system refrigerant pressures and compressor amp draw to rule out mechanical causes.

Resetting the unit may temporarily clear the fault code, but it will return if the underlying cause is not corrected. The CADM tracks compressor run times and will log the fault again as soon as four consecutive short cycles are detected. Resetting without diagnosis is not a repair and risks further damage to the compressor.
