H6 indicates a position sensor abnormality detected during compressor start-up. The position detection circuit monitors rotor movement at the moment the compressor tries to start, and if it cannot confirm proper operation, the system shuts down and displays H6. This is a protective fault designed to prevent damage to the compressor and inverter. It can be caused by power supply issues, a faulty sensor, wiring problems, a bad inverter board, or a mechanically damaged compressor.

The H6 fault itself is a safety shutdown, so the heat pump has already taken protective action by halting operation. The underlying cause, particularly if it involves the inverter board or compressor, involves high-voltage DC and AC circuits that are hazardous to handle without proper training. Do not attempt to open the outdoor unit or bypass any safety features. The system should remain off until a technician completes diagnosis.

Repair costs depend heavily on the root cause. If the fix is a wiring correction or power supply issue, labor costs alone may be in the range of 100 to 300 dollars. A replacement position sensor or inverter PCB typically adds 200 to 800 dollars in parts depending on the model.
