The U4 code means the indoor unit is not receiving normal communication signals from the outdoor unit. The data being sent is either not arriving or is arriving in a corrupted state. Daikin systems display this code and halt operation to prevent damage from running without proper coordination between the two units. The problem is most often related to power supply issues, wiring faults, or a failed communication board.

The system will typically shut itself down when U4 is triggered, so continued operation is usually not possible until the fault is cleared. Attempting to force the unit to run without resolving the underlying communication fault risks operating the compressor and refrigerant circuit without proper control feedback, which can cause further damage. The safest approach is to leave the unit off until the fault is diagnosed and corrected.

Repair costs depend on what is causing the fault. If the issue is a loose or corroded terminal connection, the cost is primarily the technician's diagnostic and labor time, typically in the range of $75 to $200. A power reset may temporarily clear the U4 code if the fault was caused by a momentary voltage fluctuation or transient electrical noise.
