A power cycle reset may temporarily clear the U5 code, but the error will return if the underlying communication problem is not corrected. Simply resetting the unit without addressing the root cause, such as a wiring issue or dual MAIN controller conflict, will not result in a lasting fix. Resolve the communication fault before relying on normal operation.

If the fix is simply reconfiguring one remote controller from MAIN to SUB, there is no parts cost and minimal labor involved. If the signal wiring needs repair, costs are generally low, typically in the range of $50 to $150 for a service call and minor wiring work. A replacement remote controller can range from $80 to $250 or more depending on the model, and an indoor unit control PCB replacement can cost $200 to $600 or higher including labor.

If the error persists, inspect the signal wiring between the remote and the indoor unit for loose terminals or damaged cables. If wiring looks correct, try swapping in a compatible remote controller to rule out a faulty unit.

The U5 error will typically prevent the system from operating normally, so running the unit is not usually possible until the fault is cleared. U5 is a communication fault rather than a safety-critical failure like a refrigerant leak or electrical short, but you should not attempt to bypass the fault.
